Ganz
Committee
By
Sharon Folk
In 1983, Bernita F. Ganz,
a member of our parish died.Since
she and her husband had no children, she left one fourth of her
estate ($84,000) to Notre Dame for the recreation of our children. The
will stated that such use was to take place only in Greeneville; however,
a subsequent ruling permitted use of the funds in Greene County. The
funds, however, cannot be used outside Greene County. Moreover,
the Ganz Fund may not be used for usual
expenditures of the parish such as religious education; thus, it has a
limited use.
After Polly’s (her nickname) death, a committee was formed that established
guidelines for the use of the monies. It
is in accord with these guidelines that the fund is presently administered. The
committee members are Pastor, Father John Appiah; Chairperson, Sharon Folk;
Vice Chairperson and Treasurer, George Toth; Secretary, Judy Collins; and
Member, Patty DuBois.(Membership
term is three years with one volunteer term expiring each year.)The
committee meets on the first Monday of every even numbered month to review
requisitions and approve them if they follow the guidelines. An
official requisition form may be obtained from the church secretary. This
form must be completed and reviewed by the youth minister, then given to
the committee chairperson at least one week prior to a scheduled meeting.
You often hear of activities taking place at the Ganz
House, the tan house on the left coming up the church’s driveway. At
the end of February 1986, the committee (with parish approval) purchased
the Ganz House for approximately $35,000.
The Ganz monies are held in a deposit and
loan account, earning interest monthly, with the Diocese of Knoxville.Only
the interest (approximately $3,000 a year) is available for the recreation
of our youth - guaranteeing a perpetual bequest.
Haiti
Mission Project
By Sandra Smith
We would like to report that $8,300.22 was raised during Lent for the de Roseaux,
our sister parish in Haiti. For those of you who are new to the parish,
Notre Dame parishioners have supported a
parish in Roseaux, Haiti (outside of Jeremie)
for over twenty years. We had hoped that the parish priest Father
Alexis Osnel would visit us during Lent,
but that did not happen. We are, however, optimistic that Father
Alexis will be visiting Notre Dame in the near future. We have received
an e-mail from him dated April 22 in which he states “…We are hurting from
the problems of life that seriously mistreats our parishioners. The cost
of life is greatly increasing and our folks have much to do to survive.
This problem hits the whole country but there are surroundings where the
shock is more difficult and for example this is the case at de Roseaux.”
Father Alexis went on to say that he has purchased more school books and
repaired the parish truck with some of the money Notre Dame has
sent.
We are now recruiting folks to work on the Haiti Project. Possibly
you are looking for something to become involved in at Notre Dame.
We would like to find three or four parishioners who would like to work
on the de Roseaux Project. Please
give this your prayerful consideration.
